What is the 10-questions interview? Regularly, we interview a promising startup or scale-up in the climate & energy tech ecosystem and ask them our 10 questions to showcase their technology, inspire the sector with their ambition and better understand their needs. With our platform (ZERO), we want to put these bold innovators on a pedestal and introduce them to our audience. Do you want to connect with this startup/scale-up, feel free to contact us at info@platformzero.co!
Wouter Guijt, CEO and founder of Nexus Energy, combines a visionary approach with a proven track record in driving sustainable innovation. In this “10 Questions” interview, he delves into his leadership journey, the mission of Nexus Energy, and how the company is transforming the clean energy landscape with cutting-edge solutions.
My name is Wouter Guijt. I have a background in marine heavy transport, and what makes me tick is picking up the pace in making the maritime industry more sustainable!
Providing the market with a sustainable alternative for their power generation, on board or on shore, that makes sense both commercially and technically. Anywhere in the world, not just in this part of Europe where we are frontrunners.
We are building modular plug-and-play solutions for zero emission power generation. We currently have one unit up and running, doing all sorts of great projects such as powering inland dredging vessels, providing shore power, powering construction equipment, and much more. We are ramping up our organization and equipment fleet with unrivalled energy density, but on that topic, we’ll share some exciting news soon. 😉
We are a group of curious individuals, highly motivated to make a difference. We critically examine both our internal processes and external opportunities to develop the best solutions for our clients. Besides that, we have a track record in doing complex, multidisciplinary projects, which helps when you’re combining new technology to make a market-ready solution in the turbulent times of the energy transition.
Climate change is happening as we speak, and I want to be able to look my children in the eye years from now and truthfully say that I’ve done everything in my power to make a difference.
The maritime sector is a brilliant sector, first of all. Loads of fun and loads of opportunities. But also a sector where geopolitics matter, where the world is our playing field, and where investments are being made with decades in mind, not years. I think change can be accelerated from the outside – i.e., taxation, regulation, directives, etc. – and from the inside. I believe that a generation of people is now coming into positions where they can make a difference. This generation deeply and intrinsically feels that we must do things differently. We cannot continue on the fossil-fuel path we have walked for so many years. In my opinion, we are at the forefront of a fantastic era!
For 12 weeks during the summer, our hydrogen power pack provided zero-emission shore power to an offshore supply vessel here in Rotterdam at Zwijnenburg shipyards. People from the municipality visited and were absolutely amazed, realizing that sustainable alternatives are already possible! I think that’s fantastic. And we just mobilized to a dredging vessel from a leading Dutch dredging company, where next week we will dredge using hydrogen again. This project is driven by two passionate engineers from the dredging company who focus on what is possible rather than on problems. It’s incredibly exciting to be involved!
Managing our growth. With the things that we can hopefully share soon, we really need to step up our game as an organization. Until now, we were focused on working our technical magic; now we need to make sure we become a stable, growing company with all the teething problems that we’ll inevitably incur. But we’ll make sure we’ll stay curious, and that we look back every now and then with a big grin on our face whilst doing so. 😉
It’s always good to brainstorm with the community, unsolicited and unfiltered, in true Rotterdam style. But also stepping out of your comfort zone with new technologies, suppliers, and solutions. And of course, addressing issues like housing, ensuring we can attract and retain the right staff, and getting the right financiers on board.
Definitely TechBinder. Two great guys with an excellent solution that unlocks the power of data in the maritime sector in a way even I can understand and use for decisions.
Equinox Ocean Turbines is also one I really admire. I’ve worked with Pieter many years ago when we installed his tidal turbines on the Oosterscheldekering, and it’s impressive to see his journey since with Equinox recently securing funding to grow and make a difference.
Coming from the marine heavy transport sector, it would be a shame not to mention Tetrahedron. Awesome to see those guys pacing on and just nailing it.
