Oeiras, Portugal – Mariculture Systems, a pioneering firm in sustainable aquaculture, is thrilled to announce the opening of its new office starting in November at Platform Zero’s Climate Campus, located at the Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. (ENIDH). As the first member of this innovation hub, Mariculture Systems Portugal aims to advance sustainable aquaculture practices and enhance collaboration with both Portuguese and international stakeholders in the blue economy.
The contract between Platform Zero and Mariculture Systems Portugal was signed during last week’s conference, MESIS’24 – the Maritime Education Shipping and Innovation Summit, featuring various international maritime and port stakeholders. The launch of the innovation community follows the efforts of the partnership that was signed earlier this year between ENIDH, Fórum Oceano, Oeiras Valley, and Platform Zero, aiming to develop a maritime business cluster in Oeiras and accelerate the development of technologies.
Platform Zero is an initiative dedicated to fostering innovation in the maritime and blue economy sectors, providing a collaborative space for startups, scaleups, and established companies. With hubs already thriving in Rotterdam and now expanding to Oeiras, Platform Zero’s Climate Campus serves as a launchpad for new technologies, business models, and investments that aim to address climate challenges and promote sustainable growth.
“Our vision is to create a vibrant ecosystem where companies like Mariculture Systems Portugal can thrive and innovate,” said Mare Straetmans, founder of Platform Zero. “By bringing together technology, expertise, and investment under one roof, we are building a foundation for impactful solutions in the blue economy. This partnership marks an exciting step in our journey of developing such a community in Oeiras, Portugal.”
Mariculture Systems, meanwhile, has established itself as a leader in sustainable aquaculture, pioneering large capacity offshore fish farming solutions that address the increasing global demand for seafood while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The company is currently working to develop Portugal’s first large-scale production offshore fish farm—a 7,000 to 8,000 metric ton sea bass and sea bream farm along the southern coast, attracting an €80 million investment with an expected significant annual revenue.
“As an aquaculture company, we’re a heavy consumer of new technologies and hopefully a co-developer of many of the solutions we will be needing for our operations. Therefore, being part of a community such as the one you are developing here is of extreme value to us,” said Fausto Brito e Abreu, deputy CEO at Mariculture Systems Portugal.
The launch of Platform Zero at Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique is a significant development in creating a vibrant ecosystem for startups, innovators, and investors in the blue economy. Mariculture Systems Portugal and Platform Zero invite all interested parties to engage and explore opportunities for partnerships.
