Distro Energy, a scale-up powered by the Port of Rotterdam, teams up with Platform Zero to explore the potential for a joint energy system that leverages new collaborative energy solutions and application areas such as shipping, mobility, and hydrogen.
Rotterdam, Netherlands (May 22, 2023)
This grid will incorporate sustainable power production, flexibility instruments like battery storage and hydrogen, and supply to shore power for shipping, truck and car charging, industry, consumers, and commercial real estate in the area. Energy Management Systems capabilities will also be incorporated to ensure users can make the best use of their production, consumption, and storage assets. The smart sharing and trading power will reduce energy costs, manage volatility, and reduce net congestion.
The collaboration will involve analysing supply and demand opportunities and storage options, while also seeking out collaborations with energy suppliers, solution providers, and actively communicating insights.
The Municipality and Port of Rotterdam, the main partners of Platform Zero and Distro Energy, are committed to accelerating the energy transition by implementing an integrated electrification strategy focused on growing local renewable production, consumption, and storage. This strategy is being implemented in the Rotterdam Makers District.
The Rotterdam Makers District, located in both the M4H and RDM areas, is rapidly emerging as a hub for innovation in climate, energy, maritime, mobility, and circularity-tech. In addition to serving as a production location for hardware that powers the transition, such as the recently announced Battolyser Systems plant, it will also serve as a showcase area for energy and climate-tech innovations that will inspire and educate corporate innovators, Dutch citizens, researchers, and students alike.
Platform Zero is working with the Port of Rotterdam and fast growing scaleups to build a leading innovation ecosystem that inspires and accelerates the energy transition. Inspirational scale-ups already involved include Battolyser Systems, SolarDuck, Zepp solutions, Wattlab, Royal Roos and many others.
“With the ambition to accelerate the energy transition by incentivising green energy, Distro fully fits into the mission of Platform Zero.” states Mare Straetmans, co-founder of Platform Zero. Distro Energy’s marketplace connects energy producers, consumers, storage, and flex providers to a fully automated, intelligent, and high-frequency electricity trading solution, which lowers accessible prices, encourages more consumption of self-produced renewable electricity, and improves the use of electricity infrastructure to reduce congestion.
